South Australia is renowned for its endless stretch of sun, sand and surf, where sheer limestone cliffs, sparkling blue waters and offshore islands make up one of the most spectacular coastlines in the world. Popular beach spots are only a short drive or tram ride from the city such as Glenelg, Henley Beach and Semaphore. Surrounding the city, more beach hot spots include Port Willunga, Normanville, Goolwa and Victor Harbor, not to mention, Kangaroo Island where pretty much any beach is perfect.

An easy, twenty-minute drive or tram ride from the heart of the city, Glenelg tops the list of Adelaide’s best beaches year after year. The white sand, safe swimming and waterfront bars, make it a popular choice from locals and tourists alike – not to mention the pod of bottlenose dolphins that call its shores home.

Just fifteen minutes further north from Glenelg, Henley Beach is home to the same spectacular coastline with half the crowds.

Two hours south of Adelaide, surrounded by more than 700 kilometres of secluded coastline is the Yorke Peninsula. This southern twin shore is riddled with fishing holes, tidal pools and prime crabbing grounds.

Voted South Australia’s most beautiful beach in 2009, Port Noarlunga boasts consistent surf conditions making it suitable for board-riders of all skill levels. This dune-backed beach is just as reliable for a refreshing swim or a day in the sun. Not to mention the picturesque jetty which is favoured by locals and tourists alike for the view and access to the reef.

Whether you like to dive, surf, swim or drive, Aldinga Beach offers something for everyone. This near-perfect beach delivers ideal conditions for an off-road 4WD, or offshore, there is an underwater cliff edge that plunges 20 metres into a basin of colourful sea life below.

Further south is the quaint coastal town of Victor Harbour, which offers a walk across the ocean on a pedestrian causeway to Granite Island, where a colony of little penguins waddle to-and-fro at sunrise and sunset. Friendly fur seals are known to bob along the footpath while flocks of migrating seabirds often glide overhead.

Kangaroo Island provides a seemingly endless string of coastline which is a mecca for swimmers, surfers and sunbathers alike. It’s a 45-minute ferry ride from Cape Jervis offering 50 pristine beaches, from the calm, aquamarine waters of Vivonne Bay to the crashing surf of the island’s south coast.
